A photograph of Michinomiya Hirohito (1901-1989), Prince of Japan from 1921 to 1926, and Emperor of Japan from 1926 to 1989 after his father Yoshihito's death. He was the figurehead of the government as Japan entered World War II alongside Germany and Italy, forming the Axis Powers.
