Title
View of Main House and Swimming Pool from Sunken Gardens, Sanita, Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island
Description
View of the main house and swimming pool from the sunken gardens at "Sanita." New York City Sanitation Department workers and their families are seen swimming in and standing around the pool. Note: In June, 1939, Addie Kahn, wife of Otto Kahn, sold her "Cold Spring Harbor" mansion (today known as OHEKA Castle) to the Welfare Fund of the New York City Department of Sanitation, who renamed it "Sanita." For a brief period in the summer of 1939, it was used as a recreation and rest center for New York City sanitation workers and their families. However, based on claims of a zoning code violation, the Town of Huntington later won a legal battle that led to the closing of Sanita. (B&W)
