Description
An account of the resource
The collection includes six ledger books of O. T. & J. Hewlett, including a petty cash ledger; a bill book containing “payable” and “receivable” bills of the firm; two bank ledgers, one labeled “Fulton Bank," and one simply labeled “O. T. & J. Hewlett, Oct. 1938,” from an unidentified bank; a cash ledger; and, a letter book containing copies of letters that provide a running account of the business dealings of O. T. & J. Hewlett. Many of the letters sought payment of outstanding debts, while others dealt with the sale of building lots in Detroit, Michigan.
The collection also includes two ledger books belonging to Peter T. Hewlett. The first, a Glen Cove Mutual Insurance Company ledger, contains receipts and notes of various business dealings as well as a list of certificates read at company meetings in Near (now known as East) Rockaway and Hempstead, N.Y. The second, a cash ledger, contains a running account of Peter’s business dealings as well as various letters, notes and certificates. The entries in this ledger mainly span the years 1865-1885, but there are also a small number of entries from 1889, which was four years after Peter’s death. Labeled “accounts of Barn brought over,” these entries are presumed to have been made by another Hewlett family member.

Title
A name given to the resource
Selected Long Island Business and Industry Materials
Description
An account of the resource

The Selected Long Island Business and Industry Materials digital collection, which spans from 1715-c.1950s, is composed of images of 340 items from Long Island Studies Institute (LISI) collections that contain business and industry-related materials, but which are not specifically considered "business collections." The majority of materials come from the collections of the Carman and Rushmore families, as well as from the Newspaper Collection.

The collection includes materials that document the operations of both the Birdsall and Garner (ancestors of the Carman family) farms and general store at Jerusalem (present-day Wantagh, N.Y.) and the Rushmore family farm at Roslyn Heights, N.Y. In addition, newspaper advertisements from the mid-nineteenth century through the early twentieth century document the services of a variety of types of businesses, including agricultural nurseries, brickmakers, carriage and wagon makers, drug stores, farm supply and feed stores, general stores, livery stable and stagecoach operators, plumbers, and sailmakers. Advertisements were taken from Nassau and Suffolk County newspapers, including the Hempstead Inquirer, Hempstead Inquirer and Long Island Advertiser, North-Hempstead Gazette, Riverhead Weekly, South Side Observer (Rockville Centre), and the Suffolk County Journal (Bay Shore and Northport editions).

Included in the collection are advertising fliers and cards, broadsides, business papers (account books and statements, business notes, indentures, ledger pages, promise to pay notes, receipts, etc.), newspaper advertisements, and photographs.

While this collection is very useful in helping to identify the location of business and industry related materials housed at LISI, it is also a valuable resource for those looking to conduct online research.

(For information concerning traditional LISI business collections, visit our Long Island Business and Industry Catalog.)

The Selected Long Island Business and Industry Materials digital collection was created with a grant from the Robert D.L. Gardiner Foundation.

John Langdon business note from Derick Albertson, 1719
Description
An account of the resource
Business note from Derick Albertson to his cousin John Langdon. In the note, Albertson asks that Langdon pay one pound and eighteen shillings to the barer, William Pa[illegible due damage to the note]ce, which was an amount due to Albertson for work that he did at Langdon's mill. The location written at the top of the note was "Musketo Cove," which is present-day Glen Cove, N.Y. (There were various spellings of of the word Musketo.)
