Description An account of the resource The collection is comprised of over 1,750 postcards that range from c.1890s-present. It includes canceled and unmarked postcards that cover a variety of subjects, including advertising, business and industry, historic buildings, scenic views, and popular tourism destinations. Among the types of postcards represented in the collection are undivided and divided back, white border, linen, real photo, photochrom, and large letter postcards. While the majority of the postcards feature views from either Nassau or Suffolk Counties, there are also a number of cards depicting images of Brooklyn and Queens. Many different postcard printers, including German printers, who dominated the postcard printing market up until the outbreak of World War I, are represented in the collection. All postcards in the collection were published in either sepia tone, color or black and white (B&W). Description An account of the resource The focus of the collection is local life on Long Island in the early-to-mid-20th century, when Pearsall worked as a carpenter, shipbuilder, and bay man. Boatbuilding on Long Island is one of the main topics of the collection. The documents in the collection cover many topics relevant to life on Long Island’s south shore including the community garden and high school in Oceanside. There is also a short oral history of Oceanside, as well as materials related to a proposed sewage treatment plan.
