Description An account of the resource The collection is comprised of over 1,750 postcards that range from c.1890s-present. It includes canceled and unmarked postcards that cover a variety of subjects, including advertising, business and industry, historic buildings, scenic views, and popular tourism destinations. Among the types of postcards represented in the collection are undivided and divided back, white border, linen, real photo, photochrom, and large letter postcards. While the majority of the postcards feature views from either Nassau or Suffolk Counties, there are also a number of cards depicting images of Brooklyn and Queens. Many different postcard printers, including German printers, who dominated the postcard printing market up until the outbreak of World War I, are represented in the collection. All postcards in the collection were published in either sepia tone, color or black and white (B&W). Title A name given to the resource Selected Long Island Business and Industry Materials Description An account of the resource The Selected Long Island Business and Industry Materials digital collection, which spans from 1715-c.1950s, is composed of images of 340 items from <a href="https://www.hofstra.edu/long-island-studies-institute/">Long Island Studies Institute</a> (LISI) collections that contain business and industry-related materials, but which are not specifically considered "business collections." The majority of materials come from the collections of the <a href="https://www.hofstra.edu/pdf/library/libspc_lisi_carman_family_fa.pdf">Carman</a> and <a href="https://www.hofstra.edu/pdf/library/libspc_lisi_rushmore_fa.pdf">Rushmore</a> families, as well as from the <a href="https://www.hofstra.edu/pdf/library/libspc-newspaper-collection-fa.pdf">Newspaper Collection</a>. The collection includes materials that document the operations of both the Birdsall and Garner (ancestors of the Carman family) farms and general store at Jerusalem (present-day Wantagh, N.Y.) and the Rushmore family farm at Roslyn Heights, N.Y. In addition, newspaper advertisements from the mid-nineteenth century through the early twentieth century document the services of a variety of types of businesses, including agricultural nurseries, brickmakers, carriage and wagon makers, drug stores, farm supply and feed stores, general stores, livery stable and stagecoach operators, plumbers, and sailmakers. Advertisements were taken from Nassau and Suffolk County newspapers, including the Hempstead Inquirer, Hempstead Inquirer and Long Island Advertiser, North-Hempstead Gazette, Riverhead Weekly, South Side Observer (Rockville Centre), and the Suffolk County Journal (Bay Shore and Northport editions). Included in the collection are advertising fliers and cards, broadsides, business papers (account books and statements, business notes, indentures, ledger pages, promise to pay notes, receipts, etc.), newspaper advertisements, and photographs. While this collection is very useful in helping to identify the location of business and industry related materials housed at LISI, it is also a valuable resource for those looking to conduct online research. Description An account of the resource The collection is comprised of over 1,750 postcards that range from c.1890s-present. It includes canceled and unmarked postcards that cover a variety of subjects, including advertising, business and industry, historic buildings, scenic views, and popular tourism destinations. Among the types of postcards represented in the collection are undivided and divided back, white border, linen, real photo, photochrom, and large letter postcards. While the majority of the postcards feature views from either Nassau or Suffolk Counties, there are also a number of cards depicting images of Brooklyn and Queens. Many different postcard printers, including German printers, who dominated the postcard printing market up until the outbreak of World War I, are represented in the collection. All postcards in the collection were published in either sepia tone, color or black and white (B&W). Note: The collection includes more than five hundred business and industry related postcards, over one hundred of which were processed and digitized with funding from a grant from the Robert D.L. Gardiner Foundation. The papers document many different aspects of farming life and also covers significant events in American history. The collection contains correspondence, indentures including mortgages, quitclaim and warranty deeds, assignments, tenant agreements, labor books, cash books, ledgers, journals, check registers, stock certificates, and tax receipts for New York and Florida. Also in the collection are household accounting, cooking and medicinal recipes, fire insurance policies, school notebooks, college diplomas, maps, personal and farming diaries, weather diaries, genealogies, bibles, ordination papers, sermons and hymns.
