Description An account of the resource The collection is comprised of over 1,750 postcards that range from c.1890s-present. It includes canceled and unmarked postcards that cover a variety of subjects, including advertising, business and industry, historic buildings, scenic views, and popular tourism destinations. Among the types of postcards represented in the collection are undivided and divided back, white border, linen, real photo, photochrom, and large letter postcards. While the majority of the postcards feature views from either Nassau or Suffolk Counties, there are also a number of cards depicting images of Brooklyn and Queens. Many different postcard printers, including German printers, who dominated the postcard printing market up until the outbreak of World War I, are represented in the collection. All postcards in the collection were published in either sepia tone, color or black and white (B&W). Photographs Description An account of the resource In 1853, Hempstead became the first incorporated village in what is now Nassau County, New York. At the time of its incorporation, this centrally located area had already become an established mercantile center. It continued expanding over the years, eventually becoming home to hundreds of commercial enterprises as well as to a growing population of residents. The collection contains one hundred and forty-seven 8” x 10” black and white photographs, all but four of which were taken on June 1, 1960, by Arthur Schwartz. The photographs, taken in a sequential block-by-block fashion, document buildings and businesses (mostly retail stores) on a number of Hempstead Village’s commercial streets, including Front, Main, and Franklin Streets, as well as Fulton Avenue. Notable are images of a number of Hempstead businesses that were established in the 19th century, including A.L. Frank’s, Gutowitz Jewelers, and Lush Pharmacy. Description An account of the resource The collection includes three original business ledgers, one from 1856-1859 and two from 1924-1934, showing accounts and business transactions with clients, and information such as wages and leave, expenses, repairs and factory supplies. There are two antique lace winding machines original to the Thomas Wilson lace company. One machine is a hand-cranked cast iron winder circa 1870 with threads still on the spinning arms, the other is a brass and steel winder. Four original lace samples are included, still on the original cardboard stating the company name, material, length and patent number. The business papers include an original Form 1096 Annual Information Return from 1931, a map of the property in Port Jefferson (1972), an aerial photograph, and an extensive appraisal report and analysis of vacant land sales from 1985.
