Description An account of the resource The collection is comprised of over 1,750 postcards that range from c.1890s-present. It includes canceled and unmarked postcards that cover a variety of subjects, including advertising, business and industry, historic buildings, scenic views, and popular tourism destinations. Among the types of postcards represented in the collection are undivided and divided back, white border, linen, real photo, photochrom, and large letter postcards. While the majority of the postcards feature views from either Nassau or Suffolk Counties, there are also a number of cards depicting images of Brooklyn and Queens. Many different postcard printers, including German printers, who dominated the postcard printing market up until the outbreak of World War I, are represented in the collection. All postcards in the collection were published in either sepia tone, color or black and white (B&W). Note: The collection includes more than five hundred business and industry related postcards, over one hundred of which were processed and digitized with funding from a grant from the Robert D.L. Gardiner Foundation. New York City Sanitation Department workers and their families are seen swimming in and standing around the pool. Note: In June, 1939, Addie Kahn, wife of Otto Kahn, sold her "Cold Spring Harbor" mansion (today known as OHEKA Castle) to the Welfare Fund of the New York City Department of Sanitation, who renamed it "Sanita." For a brief period in the summer of 1939, it was used as a recreation and rest center for New York City sanitation workers and their families. However, based on claims of a zoning code violation, the Town of Huntington later won a legal battle that led to the closing of Sanita.
