Colonel Theodore Roosevelt and the Rough Riders played a key role in the outcome of the Spanish-American War. The Spanish would surrender control of Cuba on August 12th, 1898. On 14 August, the Rough Riders returned home and landed at Montauk Point in Long Island, New York. The rest of the month in Montauk was spent in celebration of victory among the troops.
