Description

Wreckage of a P-47 Thunderbolt (covered in fire extinguishing foam) in between the houses of Eunice and Bernard Fixler (Hofstra University Class of 1941) and Mr. and Mrs. Walter R. Briggs. A firefighter is standing by the Fixler house, at center.

The plane, which was piloted by 1st. Lt. Daniel R.A. Duncan, crashed into the two houses shortly after takeoff from Mitchel Field. Duncan was killed in the crash and the Fixler’s house was destroyed; the Briggs’ house suffered extensive damage.
